I have found that when painting miniatures, you really need to add some depth to the figure. Compare these two photos:
Notice how in the first photo (of the British Infantryman), I added a seam down the pants. This is to add a depth to the trousers. Now, look at the difference it makes when compared to the Line Infantryman of Anthro-Paphburg. Overall, the figure looks more detailed and realistic.
Depth can be added by doing very simple things to your miniature. One of the easiest methods is to add a dark line to represent a seam. Another way is to take a dark version of the colour you are using, and paint the dark colour in the recesses and folds of a cloak or shirt.
So remember to always add depth to your miniatures!
